Artists and their Day jobs - Part 4

Meet two artists who have a unique take on their day jobs! Rose left her career as a high-end artist and became a full-time dedicated mum. Ofcourse, she continues to be an artist with her brand, Wolfgang and Rose. I started following her art through a mutual friend many years ago, and we finally met at the Finders Keepers market last year!

I first connected with Michael through... you guessed it! Instagram - The place where artists hang out! Michael is classically trained through the Julian Ashton Art School and is part of a group of high-calibre artists called Project 504, some of whom are Archibald finalists. He works on the side as a film extra. How's that for a day job?

Both are an inspiration to me and I'm grateful to have connected with them!

1. What kind of art do you create?
I'm a trick of all trades, oil, watercolour painting, I make dolls, I'm a designer, basically anything pretty and bright- I am your lady!

2. What is your day job?
A mum. I'm the leader of our family pack.

3. What do you like/dislike about having a day job?
Ask your own mother that question and I'm pretty sure she will have the same answers as me. Make her a cup of tea while you listen.

4. What is your dream?
To live in a world of peace and plenty for all. I'd love a little farm full of animals, fresh produce and sun where I'd paint in my little cottage and bake cookies for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

1. What kind of art do you create?
I paint and draw, moving between portraiture, landscapes and allegorical artworks.

2. What is your day job?
I work in a shared studio space with five other artists in North Sydney called Project 504, creating paintings and drawings for exhibitions.

I’m also with an agency that casts extras in film and television, and do sporadic work on shows like ‘Home and Away’, ‘Love Child’ and ‘A Place to Call Home’.

3. What do you like/dislike about having a day job?
I love creating art in a shared environment where artists spur each other on. I enjoy receiving their feedback and it’s energising working together on projects. There’s nothing I dislike about it.

When it comes to working as an extra, I enjoy the insight I get into the film and television industry – particularly on large productions that involve a lot of costumes and hair and makeup. The only drawback is the early starts (I’m not a morning person at all) and if you’ve ever watched the Ricky Gervais series ‘Extras’, elements of that ring true….

4. What is your dream?
I dream of creating large-scale paintings and drawings and would also love to make a film. I hope that some day I’ll have the resources and skills to execute them!

Generally speaking, I also aspire to enjoy the many wonders the world has to offer alongside a fulfilling career as an artist.
