Artists and their day jobs - Part 2

I used to think having a day job was a bad thing. It's as though it was only necessary until the 'dream' came true. You're supposed to hate your 9 to 5, right? "I'm just there to pay the bills"! Right?

I certainly felt that way in some previous roles. However, my perspective of working a day job has shifted in recent years. Does your work have to define you? Artist or not? Isn't it better to make the most of the work you've got, and to find ways to be creative? I learnt an interesting perspective from this interview with Sydney artist, Alesandro Ljubicic, who talks about how a day job can ground you. Despite sellout shows, he says that no matter how successful he becomes as an artist, he would still keep his day job!

In this instalment of interviews, three more inspiring artists share their stories and they like their day jobs just fine. One is lucky enough to have a day job creating art!

Graphic design, cartoon zines, cards, acrylic paintings

2. What is your day job?
Librarian, part-time

3. What do you like/dislike about having a day job?
I like reading and the elements of design in my job. I also like having a steady pay check. I dislike having to deal with people several days a week as I prefer my own company. Also, it's hard to focus on the library if I have an exciting art project on the go!

4. What is your dream?
To sell some more paintings and keep doing fun graphics/ illustration projects.

Vee Sheet

Sydney, Australia

1. What kind of art do you create?
I love drawing portraits using charcoal or graphite and still life with ballpen or charcoal. The longer the work takes, the more it excites me. Art is my passion.

2. What is your day job?
I am an IT professional leading a team of software developers driving a critical project for a Government organisation.

3. What do you like/dislike about having a day job?
It keeps me busy and lets me know the value of time.  I dislike none at the moment. If I disliked it, I would never have been working in a day job!

4. What is your dream?
I usually don't dream, I like it real. Love living in the present, the now. Make it or Break it!

(I'd have to say, well said Vee!)
